Reports to: Vice President and General Counsel


Purpose:

The Assistant University Counsel provides legal services, advice, counsel, representation, and research to ensure the University’s operations comply with applicable laws and regulations. The role supports the General Counsel by managing daily legal matters, ensuring compliance with Egyptian law, and coordinating on international or U.S.-based obligations within AUC’s hybrid legal framework.


Responsibilities:

  • Legal Advisory and Support: Provide timely and effective legal advice to university units and personnel on diverse legal and compliance matters
  • External Representation: Represent the University before governmental bodies, agencies, and committees on legal matters
  • Contract and Document Management: Draft, negotiate, and review of all University contracts and agreements, including procurement, IT, and service agreements
  • Research and Opinions: Conduct legal research on various matters, prepare formal legal opinions, and provide these opinions to concerned units
  • Compliance and Investigation: Conduct internal investigations, issue reports and recommendations, and monitor recent changes in applicable laws, regulations, and decrees to advise the University on potential impacts
  • Litigation and Dispute Management: Assist in the management of lawsuits, disputes, and claims, and draft pleadings, memorandums, and other court documents
  • General Administrative Support: Perform other administrative duties as required


Qualifications and Skills:

Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor of Law
  • Minimum of eight significant legal experience, including five years in litigation
  • Strong experience in compliance, internal investigation, and Labor Law matters


Technical Skills:

  • Bilingual Legal Drafting: Efficiency in drafting and reviewing legal documents in both Arabic and English
  • Legal Expertise: Ability to interpret complex laws, develop solutions, and provide strategic direction
  • Analytical and Strategic Thinking: Analytic approach to legal matters, with the ability to analyze complex legal problems and render formal opinions. Must be able to creatively develop strategy and tactics
  • Communication and Judgment: Strong ability to express conclusions clearly, logically, and convincingly, oral and written
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and discretion and establish effective working relationships
